It’s just a matter of time before we set foot on our neighbouring planet, Mars. Elon Musk‘s SpaceX hopes to get there in 2022 already. However, before we go, one thing is for sure, and that is that we need a flag that represents our home planet, Earth.
The flag that will be planted on Mars should be a flag that represents our origin and unity. I think these two factors are key, because we’re all living together on this floating ball in space, and this is where we come from. I’ve seen other flag of Earth proposals, but they don’t really show these two factors profoundly enough, in my opinion. That’s why I decided to create my own flag of Earth.
GB’s flag of Earth proposal – Origin & Unity
Logically, the flag is blue, because Earth is blue. I choose a dark variation of azure, with the hex code #003399, which contrasts nicely with the white circle that represents our planet. The circle is kind of large so that its contents can be nicely arranged. I think flags of planets should have a representation of the planet on the flag, for the simple reason that it should be clear that it’s the flag of a planet.
The flag of Earth must have a representation of the human race on the flag, in my opinion, because it’s about us and where we originate from. That’s why I thought that a silhouette of a family would be a great idea. The silhouette that I bought and modified is made by Kirsty Pargeter. I choose this particular silhouette because I think it’s the most suitable one. I think the flag should depict a somewhat realistic version of humans, instead of something more stylised, because we should be a bit recognisable, don’t you think?
The family is walking forwards which indicates humankind moving forwards. The man looks proud and seems a bit protective, the woman in the middle keeps the family together, and the child looks playful. It’s a bit traditional, but I think it’s important to show the different sexes and that a child is created from them. The stars can represent a lot of things, but they mostly represent our unity. I choose this amount of stars because I think it’s the most aesthetically pleasing.
