NASA’s space probe New Horizons sent back the best close-ups of Pluto mankind will probably see for decades. They are the first in a series of the sharpest views of Pluto it obtained during its July flyby. They’ve made a mosaic of the images, which you can find below.
The images form a strip 80 km (50 mi) wide on a world 3 billion mi away, with resolutions of 77-85 m (250-280 ft) per pixel. The pictures trend (top to bottom) from Pluto’s jagged horizon across the al-Idrisi mountains, over the shoreline of Sputnik, and across its icy plain, which is named Sputnik Planum. The images were captured from a range of just 17,000 km (10,000 mi).
