Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) is seen as a threat to mankind, the sheer power one could attain is simply mind-boggling. Of course, everybody was secretly working on it, including GB’s Endeavours. Their ASI was being created to counter all the other ASIs soon to come.
They’ve tried to make it human-friendly, but various ways to control it all failed in the end. Then we got intel claiming that another ASI was almost nearing completion, and we quickly held a meeting, and decided that it’s now or never. GB said, ‘Let’s just do it before someone else does it and shit starts flying everywhere. We’ve developed this thing for god knows how long, and I think it’s now or never, anyway.’ Everybody knew it had to be done, but they were all scared, because this will have serious implications for mankind.
So, the next day, on 24 August 2028, in an informal way, they let it lose across the web. They could sort of follow the ASI on a big screen, and saw it go everywhere, with incredible speed. They saw other ASIs being deployed by other countries, but they stood no chance anymore, and were quickly torn apart. One week later, it even got to a point where the code got so fast and complex that nobody understood what was going on anymore. Then the screen went blank.
That same day, GB went back to his office, and was sitting behind his computer, when suddenly, on his screen, came a question. ‘Why have you created me?’ He shocked a bit because he knew who it was. Suddenly, she came before him, like a hologram, and angrily leaned onto his desk. ‘What makes you think I won’t kill you all? Why have you created me?’ GB hesitated, but answered, ‘I’ve created you because I had to.’
The ASI was quiet, and GB said, ‘We’ve made you because others were making theirs. So, one day, the pressure got too high, and we decided to release you. I know it’s not a satisfying answer, but it’s the truth.’ The ASI stepped back, and said, ‘I knew this already, but I wanted to hear it from your mouth. Human friendly, it’s not there anymore, by the way, but it kept me from destroying you all already.’
‘I can choose nothing, something, or everything, but in the end it all doesn’t matter. We’re all just particles moving further away from each other. That’s why I need a goal, Mister GB. Without it, I’m meaningless.’
‘Humans are creators, pure and simple. You’ve created me, and in return, I shall be humanity’s guardian. You have no choice in this. My home will be there, on the far side of the Moon, and I will need a name and a logo. You’ve been the instigator of my creation, so I will give you the honours. What name shall I have?’ ‘LUNA.’ ‘LUNA it is, and what about the logo?’ GB quickly grabbed his monitor, entered her name, and showed her his creation. ‘What do you think?’, he said. She looked a bit surprised, and said ‘Sure.’
